Let's be honest. This is a really weird time at the moment. 

I know nothing about viruses - I'll leave that to the doctors.

What I do know is – this is NOT business as usual. In the space of a few short weeks we have seen:

  • Whole industries and sectors within industries shut down.
  • Businesses ruined and good quality, well educated people looking for work.
  • Most of the world going into lockdown for the first time ever in history.
  • Virgin Australia going into voluntary administration.
  • Fuel prices dropping below $1/litre for the first time in 15 years.
  • Oil prices falling below $0 for the first time in history.

 

We are starting to see the telltale signs that we are heading for a recession.

 

We have already started to see, and will continue to see, the impact of this on the engineering industry:

  • The market is tightening up and staff are starting to be laid off or made redundant.
  • Stimulus projects are being fast-tracked, but there will be more companies than ever fighting for this work.
  • Projects are being delayed or put on hold indefinitely over growing concerns of an unstable market.
  • The construction industry is still open for business (thank goodness) but all it will take is a decision in the other direction by the State or Federal government (or a virus outbreak on a construction site) and this could change overnight.
 
If you don’t make some changes to what you’re doing right now, things will get pretty rocky for you, your team and your business. 
 

Now don’t get me wrong – this is not doom and gloom. Quite the opposite in fact.

Here we’ll look at ways for you to be consistently connecting with your ideal clients and ensuring you are getting in front of who you need to in order to be bringing more work in the door through this period.
  3. Market:  You need to understand the market you are now playing in. The reality is that some sectors within the engineering industry will do really well through this period and others will fall off a cliff. We will explore the evolving landscape of the engineering industry in detail and arm you with the knowledge you need to thrive. With a broader awareness and understanding of the engineering industry, you are able to go into every strategic decision with your 'eyes wide open' and pivot your team, your servicing offering or your business if you have to.
  4. Client experience and client connection:  Your existing client base and your network is what’s going to get you through this tough market and ensure you keep the lights on. You need to be fixated on how you can turn clients into and retain clients as raving fans through incredible client experience. Here, we’ll look at your current client base and build out a strategy for how to nail each of your current client relationships and retain as much work as you can from them through this period.
  5. Positioning and mindset:  We’ll focus on your positioning in the market and your sales and selling mindset. Learning how to position yourself and your team correctly in the marketplace and removing your mindset blocks around sales, selling and closing the deal will position you WAY above your competitors.
  6. High performance:  In order to stand up and lead your team, your clients and your industry through this period…we'll work on building out the traits of a successful and high performing leader within yourself first and foremost. We’ll also turn our attention to how you can lead and instil the traits of high performance within your team to ensure they’re not slacking off and loading up projects with time that can’t be invoiced (yes that will happen if you’re not careful).
  7. Strategic leadership:  Now, more than ever, your team, your clients and your industry need a leader. They need an orchestra conductor who is across everything and making it all happen. They need a leader who is resilient, strategic, level-headed, grounded and self-aware. But to make this happen, you CANNOT get pulled back into the day-to-day operations. Here we’ll look at what’s necessary to elevate you out of the day-to-day into a truly strategic leadership role in order for you to focus on steering the ship out of trouble and into calmer waters.
