As an engineering leader or business owner in the industry at the moment - building and showing the traits of a resilient leader is so critical right now.
The people around you need someone to steer the ship. They need someone who is calm under pressure and who makes decisions quickly when they need to.
Your team and your business can't afford to have someone at the helm who is unsure, hiding and cracks under pressure.
Now resilience is a difficult skill to master - particularly when you are trying to navigate your own emotions, thoughts and feelings through this pandemic as well as being there for your team and your business.
Today I want to give you 3 strategies to become a more resilient and more effective leader during these challenging times.
1) Build Awareness
The first step is building awareness of yourself, your thoughts, your feelings and your emotions in any given moment. The easiest way to do this is to set reminders for yourself on your phone throughout the day as a reminder to pause, breathe and check in with yourself. How are you feeling? What are you going through right now? Are you calm or overwhelmed? Etc etc.
The more you can do this and build moment by moment awareness of yourself, how you are going, how you are reacting etc. The more you will be able to remain calm and in control - no matter what you are facing.
2) Believe In Yourself
You have to develop a strong sense of self and a belief in yourself that you will get through whatever you are facing - no matter what. If you don't know what you're doing, or don't yet have the skills - that’s OK - jump in and learn!
Having a strong belief in yourself and your ability to tackle any problem goes an immensely long way to you becoming a resilient leader and helping those around you to feel safe knowing they have you as their leader to steer them into calmer waters.
3) Make Time For Yourself
This one is critical. You cannot be all things to all people all of the time. You have to create the time and the space for you to recharge, breathe, regain perspective if you're feeling overwhelmed, catch up if you need to, exercise, get out in nature etc. etc - you get me!
A lot of leaders and business owners are feeling like they need to be available and present 100% of the time for their team and their business right now and let me tell you - it’s just not working!!
You have to look after yourself first and foremost and take care of your needs as a priority. If you're suffering, or stressed, or overwhelmed, or tired, or burnt out - then you are just not going to be the effective leader that your team and business need right now.
Remember, your team and your business need you more than ever right now.
Hope the above strategies help!
