Hope you’re well.
This week I was talking with a client who is super frustrated about how their team just aren't performing.
They were really frustrated about the fact that their team members and the people around them are taking way longer to do things, are not hitting their deadlines and are just generally quite slow and not responsive.
They were their wits end.
So if this is you, today I want to look at how do you take a team that's not performing well and build a team of high performing people around you.
The main concept I want to explore with you today is making sure that you’re leading your team and managing them in a way that suits their personality style.
Let me explain.
You see all of us have a unique personality style. Are unique set of personality traits. We all have ways that we like to be communicated to. We all have ways we like to be delegated to. We have strengths. We have weaknesses. We have types of work that we like doing and we have types of work that we don’t like doing.
It’s the same for us as leaders, managers and business owners as it is for our team around us.
So as leaders, manages and business owners - it’s our role first and foremost to look at ourselves when things aren’t going well and ask ourselves "What can I do differently here"? or "How can I do better here to get the most of the people around me"?
Most people‘s default reaction is to push the blame on to our team or the people around us and just assume they’re no good at what they do.
So the work that I did with my client this week around looking at their team was one of complete ownership on their behalf around how they lead and how they manage their team.
It’s about slowing down and taking the time to look at your team (particularly the ones that are frustrating you), and just pausing for a second and looking at their unique personality style. And then coming up with a really short plan, or doing a really short brainstorming exercise, around how you can lead them to get the most out of them, how would they like to be delegated to, what’s the type of work that really energises them and what’s the type of work that will really drain their energy.
And from this simple and short exercise, you are setting up the people around you to win.
So if you have a poor performing team or a team of people around you that frustrate you, instead of making it all about them or blaming them, firstly have a look at yourself and your leadership style and how you’re currently managing them. Then have a think about your team members unique personality style and consciously tailor your leadership style and your management style to get the most out of them.
Implement and watch your team flourish under your new leadership style and guidance.
