Today I want to explore with you why being busy means that you can't and won’t be a good leader…
Big statement I know!
You see, most of us are so conditioned to being busy. We think that being busy and ticking things off our to-do list, running around all day every day and getting to the end of every day exhausted is the way to achieving the success that we want to achieve.
However, the issue with being busy all the time and trying to get things done all the time is that you're never slowing down and taking the time to think strategically about where your team or your business is going.
Let me explain.
By being busy all the time you are robbing yourself, your team and your business of your ability to think creatively, your ability to think strategically and your ability to set a vision for where your team and your business is going.
So by being busy all the time and rushing around all the time and trying to fill your days full of busyness all the time you are actually sabotaging the true potential and the true success of your team and your business.
So here are 3 things that you can start to do right now to let go of the busyness in your day and move into a strategic leadership role:
1) Slow Down!
We think that being more productive is being busier. We think that rushing everywhere, ticking things off our to-do list and getting that one more phone call or one more email into every day is going to be the big difference.
It’s not.
Rushing around everywhere just means you’re frantic and frazzled and you’re missing the big picture opportunities every day.
So every day consciously breathe and slow down.
If you find yourself rushing or being busy - take a breath, pause and slow down.
2) Create Time.
Create time in your week, and I mean every week, to get out of the office and get away from your team or your business and think strategically about where things are going. Think strategically about where you’re taking your team or your business. Think creatively about where your market sector is going and how you could pivot or do something different or add a new service offering to your clients in that market sector that will allow you to set yourself apart from your competitors.
If you don’t create the space every week to get out of the office and away from your team to think creatively and have a vision for where you’re taking things, you’re just going to get stuck in the busyness of each and every day.
3) Communicate.
Make sure you communicate to your team about your vision and get by in from them about what you see and where you want to take things. That means holding regular strategy sessions with your team. Ask your team what they think and get the creative ideas flowing. The success of your team and your business doesn’t just come down to you. Tap into the potential, the creativity and the intelligence of your team and the people around you to help bolster and improve the success of your team and your business.
So in summary - slow down, pause often, take the time, create the space, think strategically and watch your team and business grow!
Go slow to go fast.
