Thou Shalt Only Work With A-Grade Clients

This is a big one. 

 

The 3rd Commandment For Consultancy Business Owners. 

 

When you first start out - you’re taking work from anyone who will give it to you.  

 

You’re building a brand, a reputation and a business - and revenue is critically important. 

 

So you play the game, do the dance and try and work with anyone and everyone in order to build momentum. 

 

And you know what - I have no issue with this when you’re starting out.  

 

It works - until it doesn’t. 

 

But for some reason, as you grow, you continue to hold onto lower value clients who don’t serve or support your future or where you’re wanting to take the business. 

 

You worry what they will think or what will happen if you let go of a client who has been with you for many, many years - but no longer fits into your vision for your business. 

 

It’s important to realise that, for each phase of business, that some or potentially most of the clients who got you to where you are right now, won’t get you to where you want to be going. 

 

I’m sure you have clients right now who are difficult to work with, always ask you to cut your fees and don’t treat you or your team with the respect you deserve. 

 

These are the time and energy vampire clients who make business hard, aren’t profitable and cause you constant and unnecessary stress. 

 

So it’s time to make a plan.  

 

It’s time to take the growth of your business seriously and assess who you really want to work with - your A-Grade clients. 

 

These are the clients who are fun to work with, pay you really good fees, set reasonable expectations and project deliverables and most importantly, treat you and your team with respect. 

 

And then there are the C & D-Grade clients - the difficult ones... 

 

So make a plan. 

 

To only work with A-Grade clients. 

 

To elevate B-Grade clients who have potential to A’s. 

 

And to phase out C & D-Grade clients over time, altogether. 

 

Just think what business would be like if you and your team got to invest all of your time, effort and energy into A-Grade clients.  

 

How much more fun, profitable and rewarding that would be.  

 

So make a plan & take action – the rewards will be worth it.
