Thou Shalt Be A Specialist, Not A Generalist

We’re halfway there! 

 

Over the past few weeks we’ve been exploring the 10 Commandments for Consultancy Business Owners. 

 

It’s what I believe to be true about how to run a successful consultancy. 

 

A business that’s fun to run, returns great profit and gives you the life and the lifestyle you truly want.  

 

Today we’re exploring Commandment #6. 

 

Thou shalt be a Specialist, not a Generalist. 

 

When you’re chasing work and trying to increase revenue - it can be really easy to fall into the trap of trying to be all things to all people. 

 

But as you pursue work from anyone in any area - you fall into the deadly trap of becoming a generalist. 

 

You may feel like you’re making the right business decision - being able to do all types of work for all types of clients.  

 

But honestly, it’s a really slippery slope towards lower revenue, poorer profit margins, working with clients who don’t actually value you and - burn out. 

 

Why? Because playing in the generalist pool with 90% of other consultancies means that you’re constantly fighting for work based on one criteria. 

 

Being the cheapest. 

 

Nothing else matters.  

 

And the clients that play in this space - that’s the main criteria they choose who to give work to - whoever is the cheapest. 

 

And I don’t want that for you. 

 

It’s time to decide.  

 

What area of work do you love? What are you good at? Who are the clients you really want to work with? 

 

That’s your niche. That’s your specialty. 

 

Go into that. Double down on that. 

 

Become known for the work you do and the results you get for your clients in this specialty. 

 

As your team grows - bring on more specialties. 

 

But never again fall into the generalist “all things to all people” trap. 

 

Focus on becoming a specialist and reap the rewards across all levels. 

 

More revenue, higher profit margins & better clients. 

 

Happier staff, a better performing business and more time to spend with those who you hold near and dear. 

 

It’s a win - win. 

 

But it starts with a decision.
