For most in the engineering and construction industry at the moment - things are hectic!
There is plenty of work on and the biggest issues at the moment are workload, resourcing and keeping up with clients and how fast they want to go right now.
A big frustration for most at the moment is managing their clients, dealing with tight deadlines and juggling the constant workload issues (as well as the team overwhelm and burnout that comes with this).
Today I want to explore with you 2 areas that can make a massive difference to these very real issues you are facing at the moment.
1) Deeply Understand Your Clients World
A lot of client related issues stem from not taking the time to deeply understand your clients world.
Slow down and take the time to talk to them and understand what their drivers are.
Who do they report to?
What are the issues and pressures they are facing at the moment?
How could you make their lives easier through a tweaking of your delivery program on their project?
What are their critical success factors for this particular project? I.e. what are their non-negotiables for this project that you and your team need to make sure you focus on getting right?
2) Deepen Your Connection With Your Clients
Most leaders and business owners I know only have surface level and superficial relationships with their clients.
They see the relationship as purely transactional. "We do the work and you pay the bills". And for a small group of clients - that’s all it will ever be.
But for most clients you work with, there is always the opportunity to deepen the relationship.
Make the time to really get to know your clients on a personal level. Their interests, hobbies, what they do on the weekend, their relationships, their family, their struggles and challenges (everyone has these).
At the end of the day - your client is a human being - just like you and me.
And people (your clients) like doing business with people they like (you!)
The more you deeply understand your clients world and the more you deepen your connection and your relationship with your client - the more work they will give you and the more relaxed and relationship focused they will be with you, your team and your business.
Try the above and I guarantee a lot of your current client 'issues' will drop away.
