It’s fair to say that business owners are always busy. However, there are different kinds of busy from what I’ve seen in my experience. And those different kinds of busy result in two outcomes for the business: growth or standstill.
We all like to tick things off our to-do lists, and this can actually sometimes get in the way of planning our time well. Automatically doing the next thing on our list can drag you into doing activities that could actually easily be delegated or outsourced.
Yes, you get immediate satisfaction (or reward) as you tick action items off, but is that actually what you are meant to be doing with your time?
Let’s put it this way: Doing one task takes you away from doing another.
So, what kinds of tasks fill your working hours? Are you clear on where you're spending your time?
As time is finite, there’s an absolute need to use the time that you have well.
Take small breaks every now and then to look at your to-do list, and think about which activities can be done by someone else on your team.
Why? Because you might actually be stuck doing low-dollar activities in your business. These are activities that are not the best use of your time.
For example, admin activities which you could hire for or outsource, or constantly being available to everyone, which means jumping from one activity to another.
Doing these activities in your business, in turn, prevents you from spending the right amount of time (or any time at all) on high-dollar productive activities which are the tasks and activities that are actually going to help you grow.
Wherever & whenever you can, delegate effectively to the team around you (or hire someone if you don’t have a team). This will free up more of your time - and as a business owner, you actually should be doing more strategic activities and planning.
You are the creator of the future of your business, and you need to take your role seriously.
I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to teach yourself to analyse how you spend your time. Do it often. Stop and reflect. It will build awareness about when you get pulled back into doing low-dollar activities.
Value your time and where you’re spending your effort and attention. Over the long run, it makes a massive difference to the success (or not) of your business.
