Let's be honest. This is a really weird time at the moment.
I know nothing about viruses - I'll leave that to the doctors.
What I do know is - now, more than ever, we need leaders.
Your team, your business, the people around you, your family - they need a leader.
Being a leader when things are going really well - that's easy and fun.
Being a leader in adversity. When things aren't going so well, when people are scared and overwhelmed and can't think straight - that's not so easy.
But where there is fear and overwhelm, there is also opportunity. And this is a really incredible opportunity for you to learn, to build the skills and get to experience what it's like leading in adversity.
Now, no-one expects you to be perfect at this. But your team and the people around you who look up to you - are looking at you to guide them, to comfort them and to help them feel more at ease knowing that you're leading the way.
There are 3 key elements to leading in adversity that I want to walk you through now to help you with this:
1) Build and develop your self-awareness. You need to know when you are thinking and acting from a place of centred, rational logic and when you are thinking and acting from a place of triggered, emotional overwhelm. Building your internal self-awareness is the first step to leading effectively during adversity.
2) You must take action. Not just any action for the sake of taking action - but well thought out and logical action to solve a problem or crisis (or to prevent one from happening in the future). A tendency for most people when faced with uncertainty, overwhelm or adversity is to do hunker down and do nothing. Sometimes this is the right strategy, but most of the time doing nothing or refusing to adapt or change causes more problems. Think and strategise first, then act - often.
3) Communicate as often as possible. Even if it’s talking through your problems and admitting you don't have all the answers. The more you communicate and talk to others around you about the problems you are trying to solve, the more everyone becomes part of the solution. Talk, communicate and connect as often as possible.
This is an unprecedented time for the whole world. How you stand up and lead now could make a massive difference in the long run for your team and business.
