Thou Shalt Focus On Profit

One of the big challenges I see (and the big opportunity for you and your business) is that too much time is spent on increasing revenue…. 

….and way too little focus is spent on making the business more profitable. 

Commandment #7 for consultancy business owners is “Thou Shalt Focus On Profit”. 

And I get it.  

Generating revenue is the fun bit. 

For some - it comes quite easily and naturally. 

It’s the thrill of chasing and securing new work. 

Of bringing new clients into the business.  

The sense of achievement and growth. 

But the profit piece… 

…it’s less sexy. 

It’s about systems. Processes. Standard operating procedures. 

Checklists. Internal training. Reviewing when things go wrong and how to get it right for next time.  

It’s the less fun stuff that no one wants to do or make much time for.  

But profit is the lifeblood of your business. 

I once had a business partner tell me “If we’re not making decent profit, what are we doing this all for? We may as well go fishing”. 

And it’s true.  

You’re the business owner. You’ve taken all the risk in setting up and running your business.  

Your profits are your reward.  

Your profits are the indicator of how well your business is being run. 

And if you’re not making the profit you know you should be. 

And you’re not putting the time, attention and focus on increasing your profits… 

…what are you doing this all for? 

The #1 metric you should be tracking in your business is profit.  

Your #1 focus should be - “What am I doing today, tomorrow, this week and this month to make my business more efficient, more streamlined, more productive and ultimately - more profitable”? 

Profit is the lifeblood of your business. 

It allows you reinvest for growth, upgrade the business, reward your team, set your family up for financial freedom or take them on an amazing holiday.  

It’s important - so focus on it.
